Behind The Smile

There’s more to Thailand than the smile

The Death Penalty

Published on February 29, 2008 by admin

Surprisingly the Thai Department of Corrections has a page justifiying the use of the death penalty. I wonder how do you “correct” someone by murdering him (or her)? It is a long way from sentencing to the death penalty eventually being carried out and prisoners can request individual pardon from the king. Since 2001 the king has rejected 26 such requests, according to the department.

Jesus Is Coming

Published on February 27, 2008 by admin

Reading the headlines in this morning’s Bangkok Post you’d think Jesus was about to descend on earth. So let’s rejoice. Thaksin is coming back. And with him, it seems, the drug war, part II, and other lunatic policies. I wonder what will happen over the coming days.

More from the magic lantern. This guy looks like some kind of soldier to me with that lance. Beautiful colors.

That Time Of Year Again

Samak and his buddy Chalerm have finished the script and will start shooting the “War On Drugs, Part 2, Thaksin Returns”. These “wars are just a good excuse for powerful people to get rid of their enemies, methinks. The reasoning is that if you get shot you must have been guilty, Otherwise why would you get shot? It’s this kind of circular reasoning that makes the current Samak kitchen cabinet of such outstanding quality.

More magic lantern images from the good old days, Thailand in 1895.  It was certainly colorful.

Little Green Monsters

Published by admin

The smoke belching little green buses exist in a world all their own. A world with no traffic rules, and a me first attitude. Very unthai, but I’m sure the drivers are nice people when you meet them one on one?

As Thailand Guru says:

The small green buses should be avoided, but cost 2.5 baht. These have been called “the unloved buses” because they belch choking black pollution, the drivers are aggressive, and their routes are confusing and change often. Forget the bus maps. If you aren’t Thai and familiar with where the particular bus is going (e.g., yelled out the window by the fare attendant), then don’t take a chance.

Obama Captures Thailand

Published on February 21, 2008 by admin

According to the Bangkok Post Obama won the primary election by Democrats Abroad. Very prosaically it was held in a Starbucks. Obama won 65.6% and Billary 32.7% with small percentages going to other candidates such as John Edwards. I hope Obama wins in November.
